On this day in 2000: Putin wins the Russian presidency

Born on October 7, 1952 in St. Petersburg, Russia (then Soviet Union), Putin joined the KGB (National Security Committee) in 1975. After more than a decade and a half of intelligence service, he became the deputy mayor of the Russian city of St. Petersburg in 1984 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

Putin, then the Kremlin's deputy chief administrator in the Russian presidential office, was appointed prime minister in 1999 by Russian president Boris Yeltsin. After Yeltsin's resignation on December 31, 1999, Putin became acting president and then won the presidential election in 2000.

After that, Putin, who was president for two consecutive terms, was removed from office due to legal provisions, but managed to make his confidant Dmitry Medvedev president in 2008. Putin, who was prime minister for four years from 2008, was elected president for the third time in 2012 and for the fourth time in 2018. He has been elected for the fifth term in the presidential election held in Russia from March 15 to 17.
