On this day in 1981: The US President was shot

Hinckley fired six rounds, one hitting Reagan. The first bullet struck White House Press Secretary James Brady in the head. Similarly, a second bullet struck police officer Thomas Delahanty in the neck as he tried to save Reagan. The third shot that passed close to the President hit the window of the house across the street.

After that, the security personnel pushed the President towards the limousine. A fourth bullet hit Secret Service agent Timothy McCarthy in the stomach while protecting the president. Of the fifth and sixth bullets, one hit the bullet-proof window of the limousine and the other hit President Reagan under the arm. However, it was only after seeing blood in Reagan's mouth that he realized he had been shot. After that, Reagan was taken to George Washington University Hospital and returned to work after 12 days of treatment.

During the investigation, Hinckley, the shooter, was found to have mental issues. He told security officials that he shot President Reagan to gain publicity. Four presidents have been shot dead in America so far. Abraham Lincoln in 1865, James A. Gaffield was assassinated in 1881, William McKinley in 1901, and John F. Kennedy in 1963 while still president. Reagan was born on February 5, 1911 in Illinois, USA and died on June 5, 2004.
