Standing at the Tribhuvan International Airport, it seems that the whole of Nepal is going abroad. Because every day an average of 2200 Nepalis are taking work permit to go for foreign employment. According to the Department of Labor, there are 65,658 people who come and go on vacation and get new work permits in the month of February alone.

So many Nepalis have taken work permits for working in 99 different countries. This data shows that 5 out of 8 districts of Madhesh province are in the top ten list of districts to go abroad in search of work.

What are the skills of Nepalis who have gone abroad to work? Out of 65 thousand 658 people who received work permit in February, only 85 people have higher education, i.e. 0.12 percent. And there are a total of 349 people with professional skills, i.e. 0.53 percent. There are 5 thousand 160 semi-skilled people, that is 7.85 percent. There are 47 thousand 577 people who are educated, i.e. 72.46 percent. There are 18.97 percent of workers who do not have any skills and abilities.

Looking at the data of Nepal Labor Migration Report for the three years since 2019/20, the number of unskilled workers going abroad is almost half. Looking at this data, the percentage of workers without any skills in 2019/20 among those who went for foreign employment is 57.8 percent. In 2020/21, this percentage is 56.2 and in 2021/22, it is 54.2 percent.
