At least 33 people have died due to heavy rains and floods in Afghanistan for three days, the disaster management department of the government said on Sunday.
"There has been a huge human and financial loss due to the sudden flooding due to the rain since Friday," Janan Sayek, the spokesperson of the department, said.
According to Sayek, most of the deaths were due to falling roofs. About 600 houses have been damaged or destroyed, 600 kilometers of roads have been destroyed and about 2000 acres of agricultural land has been flooded.
Out of the 34 provinces of the country, about 20 provinces have received heavy rains. This has been followed by an unusually dry winter which has left the land parched and forced farmers to delay planting.
After the Taliban returned to power in 2021, the flow of foreign aid to impoverished Afghanistan has decreased drastically. This is hindering the relief response to natural disasters. In February, at least 25 people were killed in a landslide that occurred after heavy snowfall in eastern Afghanistan, and about 60 people were killed in the third week of rain that ended in March. The United Nations warned last year that Afghanistan is experiencing a major change in extreme weather conditions.
According to scientists, weather patterns are worsening due to climate change and Afghanistan, which has been affected by four decades of war, has become one of the least prepared countries to face such an event.
