The Election Commission has decided to initiate immediate action if social networks or media are misused against the code of conduct issued for the purposes of the House of Representatives and State Assembly by-elections to be held on 15th Baisakh.

Action will be taken if the election code of conduct is not followed

The code of conduct is in force from March 28 until the completion of the election to conduct the by-elections in Ilam Constituency No. 2 of the House of Representatives and State Assembly Constituency No. (1) of Bajhang in a clean, free, fair, fearless and safe environment. In a statement released by Shaligram Sharma Paudel, the spokesperson of the

commission, the code of conduct states, among other things, that false, misleading and malicious information should not be published and broadcast through social media, and that no one should operate an account on social media or open or operate a false site with the intention of adversely affecting the election. It has been reminded that there is a rule that should not be done, in order to influence the election, it is not allowed to provoke anyone, to spread false propaganda, to spread misleading information and to make misleading comments.

Likewise, the information or content published or broadcast for any purpose should not be hacked and shared, tagged, commented or counter-commented on social media for the purpose of influencing the election, and should not be used in any form to assassinate someone's character, slander, libel, or similar content. It is strictly prohibited to produce and cause such material to be published or broadcast by any means. The District Code of Conduct Monitoring Committee headed by the Chief Electoral Officer Coordinator of the concerned district has been instructed to take immediate necessary action in case of code of conduct violation.

A social media monitoring unit will be formed in the Election Commission to order the immediate stoppage of unwanted activities and to recommend necessary action to those who violate the code of conduct. The Commission has decided to write to the Press Council of Nepal to monitor the media and take necessary action according to the law to discourage false, misleading, false information, malicious expressions and news that negatively affect the election through the mass media and to conduct the election in a clean, free, fair and fear-free environment.
