Disqualified fighters’ discharge process begins

SINDHULI, OCT 11 - The discharge process of People’s Liberation Army (PLA) combatants disqualified by the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) has started at the second division cantonment of UCPN (Maoist) in Dudhauli, Sindhuli district, from Sunday.

The government and the UCPN (Maoist) began the discharge and rehabilitation process of the 4,008 disqualified PLA combatants.

A team comprising Minister for Peace and Reconstruction Rakam Chemjong, UNMIN Chief Karin Landgren and PLA deputy commander Chandra Khanal reached the camp on Sunday.

The team talked with 60 disqualified fighters for about two hours and inquired about their wish. The latter univocally demanded guarantee from the state that they will be provided  education and employment after their discharge. There are 373 disqualified fighters in the main and satellite camps under the second division cantonment.

The disqualified PLA men said they were ready for immediate discharge if the government guaranteed their management.  “If this happens, we are ready to leave the camp any time,” said a disqualified fighter.

Minister Chemjong assured the disqualified fighters they would be well managed after discharge. He also said the government would set up various camps soon.

A technical team headed by the joint secretary of the ministry is scheduled to visit all the satellite camps soon.
