Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital celebrates fourth anniversary
BHAKTAPUR, OCT 09 - Minister for Health and Information and Communications Kamal Thapa inaugurated the fourth anniversary function of Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital at a function here today.
At the function minister Thapa and ambassador of Sri Lanka Grace Ashirwatham jointly laid the foundation stone for the hospital’s new surgical block. The block is being constructed at a cost of about Rs l2,000,000.
Addressing the function, minister Thapa spoke of a programme to make the health service in the country more effective through the involvement of His Majesty’s Government, NGOs and the community and expand the service nation-wide.
He also said there is a Program to hand over to the community health centres and health posts in the rural areas in order to bring better health care to the public.
Remarking that there has been noticeable improvement in the capabilities of health centres and health posts in the countryside after their management was handed over to the community, Mr Thapa said the government is thinking in terms of handing over the management of the hospitals also to the community and NGOs.
Pointing out that the government was likewise thinking in terms of involving the private sector in bringing quality medical care to the people, he said nursing homes and hospitals in the private sector had succeeded in stemming the flow of large amounts of money to foreign countries for medical care abroad.
The ambassador of Sri Lanka presented letters of appreciation to individuals contributing more than Rs 5,000 to the construction of the cancer block.
Describing cancer as a main problem in public health, she spoke of the need for an integrated approach among the community and government organisations for tackling this disease and for raising public awareness. Health Ministry's secretary Bijaya Raj Bhattarai spoke of the need for private sector and NGO involvement in the task of bringing medical care to the masses.
Bhaktapur CDO Gehanath Bhandari said it is one of the main aims of the government to bring basic medical care to the masses.Posted on: 2003-10-08 09:02
