Maoists take hold of Dhankuta Municipality

Post Report

DHANKUTA/ KATHMANDU, NOV 02 - The second phase of protests of the UCPN (Maoist) was aimed at putting up a show of force. And force they did show. As the protests entered the second day, Maoist cadre on Monday besieged Dhankuta Municipality, and even ‘appointed’ the mayor and other office bearers there.

Maoist cadre stormed the municipal office and announced a capture. The Maoist assistant district in-charge Pushpa Dhungana proclaimed Ganesh Bista and Kabita Rai the new mayor and deputy mayor.

To consolidate the seizure, Maoists organised a swearing-in ceremony where Dhungana, who was the chief guest at the function, administered oath of office and secrecy to the newly appoin-ted office bearers. Dhungana said they had been appointed as per article 47, clause 2 of  the “people’s constitution” under the Limbuwan Autonomous State. According to the Maoists, the local government in the municipality comes under the purview of Limbuwan autonomous province.

The UCPN (Maoist) that began its protests from Sunday picketed municipa-lities, District Development Committee and Village Development Committee offices across the country bringing all work to a grinding halt.

In Kathmandu, Maoist cadre gathered in front of the municipality office, did not let any official enter. Fifty-seven VDCs in Kathmandu, 41 in Lalitpur and 16 in Bhaktapur remained closed since morning.

Maoist cadre, who termed Monday’s agitation a ‘cultural movement’, sang and danced as part of their protests.

The main opposition party announced the second phase of protests seeking to restore ‘civilian supremacy’.
