Lamichhane sets talk show world record

KATHMANDU, APR 14 - Journalist Rabi Lamichhane has set the world record for the longest television talk show of 62 hours and 12 minutes.

He was presented with a certificate on Saturday night by a Guinness World Records official for setting the new world record. Earlier, the longest talk show staged by Pavlo Kuzheyev and Tetiana Danylenko for a 52-hour broadcast to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence in 2011, according to the Guinness World Records.

Lamichhane, 36, had begun his television broadcast by interviewing UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Puspha Kamal Dahal on Thursday morning and ended his programme on Saturday night. He runs an online TV, “Ma Rastra Sewak”, from the US.   

During the show, Lamichhane interviewed over 100 people ranging from politicians, artists to sport personalities, social activists and commoners on the theme “Lord Buddha was born in Nepal”.

He also talked with Nepali people living abroad on Skype.

The programme was broadcasted by News24, a national television channel.

After becoming the world’s longest TV talk show presenter, Lamichhane said he was feeling exciting and thrilling.

“It had been around 95 hours since I last slept.” He had taken his food and drinks while interviewing guests.  

Born in Nagarkot, Bhaktapur, Limchhane ran television programmes for Nepal Television, state owned television channel for many years. Lamichhane now lives in Baltimore in the United States, where he is the manager of a branch of the sandwich shop Subway.

Lamichhane said he will not immediately leave for the US. “I have many programme concepts that people here are interested into. I can work on my own and I don’t think it’s necessary to go back,” Lamichhane said.
