The Kathmandu Metropoli-tan Police Range (MPR) arrested 164 people in the Capital on the Nepali New Year eve.
In a bid to make elaborate security arrangements in the city, police launched a security campaign to avoid troubles during New Year celebrations.
The arrestees included 8 women and 156 men, out of whom 129 were released on Sunday and 35 are still under investigation.
According to MPR spokesperson Chakra Bahadur Singh, the police had tightened security establishing 24 checkpoints in vulnerable areas of the city. “We plan to tighten security till Sunday night to ensure safety of the people,” said Singh
The MPR has stepped up security considering potential threats to overall security situation on Saturday and Sunday when New Year celebrations were in full flow. To curb the possible threats, security personnel have been running mobile patrols under various police circles and sectors coordinated by the MPR. Police have also mobilised 25 plain clothed personnel to coordinate with other intelligence units.
