A girl was gang-raped on December 19 at Aaurawani in Sunsari district. According to police Inspector Suman Timilsina, she was raped by three men on her way back from a fair.
Timilsina said they were searching for the six suspects that the victim’s family has named in a complaint. However, he refused to disclose the names lest the suspects should flee.
The case came to light only 10 days after the incident due to pressure from political parties and locals to cover it up. The victim’s kin say the guilty are relatives of local political leaders. “Party leaders from the central to local levels offered us money to press that we forget the case,” one of the victim’s relatives said. “We want justice,” he said. The victim is in custody of a local nongovernmental organisation after treatment.
