Germany chips in 37m euros

KATHMANDU, DEC 11 -

The German Embassy announced on Tuesday to make available 37.2 million euros for new and ongoing programmes in Nepal for the years 2012-13. The fund comprises of 14 million euros for financial cooperation and 23.2 million euros for technical cooperation projects, a German Embassy statement said. Germany’s new commitment brings German Development Assistance to Nepal since the beginning of Nepal-German cooperation in 1961 to a total of 1.099 billion euros.

The emphasis of German Development Cooperation in Nepal remains on inclusive development, poverty alleviation and support for the peace process in all sectors. “The German government continues the successful and long-standing bilateral economic cooperation with Nepal in the mutually agreed focal areas of economic development and trade, renewable energy and energy efficiency and health,” the statement read.

Further activities will be implemented in the field of infrastructure development and strengthening of the peace process.

UK gives $5.7 million to NPTF

The United Kingdom has announced a US$ 5.7 million grant to the Nepal Peace Trust Fund (NPTF). The funds, provided under the UK Multilateral Debt Relief Initiative, will go to the NPTF to implement provisions of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, including support to grassroots peace building initiatives, conflict-affected communities and future elections, said a statement issued by the British Embassy in Kathmandu.
