Thursday brought with it a shocker for fans and well-wishers of Manisha Koirala in Nepal and India. Reports that the 42-year-old actress has suspected cancer spread like wildfire across the countries, with the media awash with unconfirmed reports of her having cancer of the ovary and metastasis in the liver.
“It is probably cancer of the ovary with metastasis in the liver,” a medical source in Kathmandu told the Post. Liver metastases are cancerous tumours that spread to the organ from other parts of the body. Family sources in Kathmandu maintained that tests were still on and that it was too early to say anything for sure.
On Tuesday, Manisha was taken to the Mumbai-based Jaslok Hospital, where she is undergoing various tests.
Following complaints of pain in the abdomen and vomiting, Manisha was admitted to Norvic Hospital in Kathmandu on Sunday, where she was kept for two days. On Tuesday afternoon, Koirala was flown to Mumbai with her mother Sushma accompanying her. Her father Prakash and brother Siddhartha joined them there on Thursday.
In Mumbai, there was no official word from the doctor attending to Manisha. Her relatives were tight-lipped too. Jaslok Hospital, however, refuted the reports. “Reports that Manisha has been diagnosed with cancer are rumours,” the Spokesperson of the hospital, Krishnakant Dasyam, told the Post over telephone from Mumbai. “She was admitted after she complained of discomfort. Some medical tests have been completed and we are awaiting the results,” he added. He claimed that Manisha is ‘moving around and is absolutely fine.’
As reports of Manisha’s ill health spread, social networking sites saw a deluge of messages from fans and well-wishers praying for her speedy recovery. Leader of the opposition in the lower house of the Indian parliament, Sushma Swaraj, tweeted, “I am deeply concerned at Manisha Koirala’s health. Koirala family is close to us. She is like a daughter to me. Pray she is well soon.”
Manisha, who is also fondly called Manya or Manu, made her Bollywood debut in Saudagar in 1991 and has recently made a comeback with Bhoot Returns.
