Rights violation cases ‘fell sharply’ in 2011

POST REPORT
KATHMANDU, FEB 19 -

A human rights yearbook shows promising decline in the cases of human rights violation in 2011. It, however, claims politicisation and institutionalisation of crime, impunity, anarchic mentality swelled over the year.

“The Human Rights Yearbook 2012” made public by Informal Sector Service Centre (Insec) shows 3,039 individuals became the victims of human rights violation in 2011 compared to 4,240 in 2010. The report claims that 12 out of 377 individuals were killed from the government side in 2011. It says 89 people were killed by various unknown groups. In the mean time, 59 people were abducted.

Similarly, Insec says all is not well with the condition of Nepali women. It states women still remain physically and psychologically, social and economically suppressed in many ways.

According to the report, a total of 648 individuals were the victims of violence against women. The data reveals 54 women were killed due to internal family conflicts. The women killed due to dowry were 13.  The problem is so serious that 8 women were killed in Rauthat alone for not bringing dowry.

Combining both the women above and below 18 years, a total of 328 women became the victims of rape. Out of it, 217 were below 18 and 111 above 18 years. On the other hand, 29 women were the victims of attempted rape.

In the meantime, 123 women became the victim of various kinds of sexual abuses. Despite the country declared a land mine free state, 10 individuals died in 22 incidents of under ground mining. The annual evaluation of Insec criticised the government for not abiding by the law and turning dead ears to court verdicts.
