Now, retiring PLA ‘moms’ up in arms

JHAPA/KAILALI, FEB 11 -
The Special Committee Secretariat completed disbursing the first instalment of the cash package to retiring Maoist combatants amid obstructions fuelled by disenchantment among the former fighters.

However, Saturday saw a protest from female combatants in the seventh division in Kailali, who obstructed the cheque disbursement process for four hours. Some 200 of the combatants from various camps under the division padlocked the office of the secretariat team at Lisnegram Brigade in the Badaipur satellite camp.

The “moms” demanded they be given an additional 50 percent of the total amount for the nourishment of their babies, health and education facilities to the children and pension to the injured and maimed fighters, among others. The cheque distribution process resumed after division commander Jiban Budha assured the women that he would pile pressure on the authorities concerned to address their demands. Also in the seventh division, retiring combatants said they are not paid for the Nepali month of Magh. “The commander decided against providing the salary of the month to the retiring fighters as the latter refused to hand over 40 percent of their retirement cash,” said a company commander.

Similarly, enraged at the party’s decision to pocket 40 percent of the retirement cash from them, fighters in the first division in Ilam announced a series of protest programmes and even threatened to defect the party en masse.

Organising a press meet under the banner of the PLA First Division Struggle Committee in Jhapa on Saturday, the disgruntled fighters made public their week-long protest programme beginning Sunday.

Terming the PLA commanders who allegedly seized cheques as neo-feudalists, the agitating fighters served an ultimatum to the government to address their demands by Thursday. “We will enforce a banda in the eastern region on Friday if the government fails to pay heed to our demands,” Kshitiz Limbu, the struggle committee’s coordinator, said. They demanded the seized cheques and identity cards be returned and the disqualified and YCL members be paid from the PLA fund.
