NEW DELHI, FEB 11 -
The legendary literary figure of Nepali language, Indra Bahadur Rai, was honoured with the ‘Banga Samman’—one of the most respected accolades in West Bengal state in India.
The state’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee gave away the award to Rai and a cheque of Rs 1 lakh amid a special function organised in Siliguri on Friday to inaugurate the Uttar Banga fest.
Rai, a veteran Nepali literatteur and based in Darjeeling, talked with the Post on Saturday and expressed happiness at receiving the honour.
“I have taken this award as a recognition of efforts in this region to propel Nepali language to an honourable position, “ Rai said over telephone. Rai, 85, has enriched Nepali literature with dozens of popular works like Aja Ramita Cha and Bipana Katipaya. Ten other luminaries of West Bengal, including former captain of the Indian football team Bhaichung Bhutia, were also honoured with the ‘Banga Samman.’
The West Bengal government started giving away the award this year to honour special contributions in the fields of literature, culture, music and sports.
