Govt change hubbub rocks Maoist meeting

POST REPORT
KATHMANDU, FEB 10 -
As heated debate in the party over change of guard at Singha Durbar continues, the establishment faction of the Maoist party on Friday challenged the hardliners to present a viable alternative to the incumbent government. The faction said a change in government at this point will invite instability and hamper the ongoing peace and constitution drafting processes.

The hardline faction, in response, however, said dissolution of the present government only will pave way for concrete discussions on possible alternatives to the present government.

The faction led by Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai also told the hard-line faction led by Mohan Baidya that the PM will step down once the foundation for a national consensus government is laid.

The Baidya faction is seeking an immediate dissolution of the present government after the latter backtracked from its decision to legalise war-era property transactions.

Government change is the top agenda of the Maoist Standing Committee (SC) meeting which is on since Thursday.

As the hardline faction mounted pressure on the PM to resign, the SC meet on Friday decided to initiate dialogue with other parties on the formation of a national unity government. The Maoist party has a standing policy on the formation of a national consensus government, but rival factions have divergent views.

“We will hold discussions with other parties on forming a national consensus government. The PM will resign only after a best alternative to the incumbent government is at hand,” said Standing Committee member Barsa Man Pun. “We demanded the the prime minister step  down immediately; the next meeting will settle the issue of his resignation,” said Maoist Secretary CP Gajurel.

The Bhattarai faction of the party is saying that the current government should be converted into a national consensus one, while Dahal is not clear on the change. The Baidya faction has been insisting that the Bhattarai-led coalition cannot take the shape of a national consensus government.
