When I first watched trailers of Shakun Batra’s directorial debut Ek Mein Aur Ekk Tu, I was instantly convinced that the film belonged to one of my favourite genres: romantic comedy. I have thoroughly enjoyed films like Hum Tum, Saalam Namaste and Jab We Met, all Bollywood presentations of the same genre. But this one, produced by Karan Johar disappoints; somewhat in the first half and hugely in the second. It misses both the light-hearted fun and the romance.
The film tells the story of 14 days in the life of Rahul Kapoor (Imran Khan)—a 25 year old architect who is fed up with life; a failed career and overly ambitious rich parents who have so far made every decision in his life for him. This lonely young Punjabi boy meets Riana Braganza, a free-spirited 27 year old hairdresser in Vegas on Christmas Eve. These two seemingly opposite spirits get so caught up in the drinking game that they become inebriated enough to get married in Vegas. From here on, the film moves as a narrative of the changes brought about in Rahul’s life. Although inspired by the 2008 Hollywood film What Happens in Vegas, the film is rather novel in its attempt to deal with a somewhat different storyline. But all new things are not necessarily better than old ones, and novelty is not something that guarantees success. And Ek Mein Aur Ekk Tu is a perfect example of this.
The film is very boring, and since it is not a ‘love story’ as expected, it will not work with many of you. The actors’ performances are average, and the director doesn’t seem to have been too successful in completely utilising Kapoor’s penchant for acting. Batra, in fact, has failed to bring out the best in both Kapoor and Khan.
The music in the film, composed by Amrit Trivedi, is very good though. Songs like Auntji and Talli—with their fun lyrics (penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya) and sing-along melodies are able to keep you entertained—no matter for some minutes! Overall, the film failed to impress me; watch it only if you have nothing else to do this Valentine’s Week.
