Polls if no statute: Koirala

POST REPORT
BIRATNAGAR, FEB 09 -
Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala on Thursday said there is no alternative to elections if the constitution is not promulgated within the stipulated time frame.

“There are no grounds to extend the tenure of the constitution assembly again by violating the Supreme Court’s order. Therefore, there is no alternative to go for elections,” Koirala said. He was addressing a programme here.

He also accused the UCPN (Maoist) of hindering the constitution drafting process. He, however, claimed that the constitution will be drafted in time if the party acts responsibly.

He claimed that the Maoists were trying to impose authoritarianism in the country by sidelining the peace and constitution writing processes.

He said the Maoists were following a “self-destructive path” by flouting the democratic norms.
