A political threat from one of the cabinet members is shocking (“Revolt brewing in Madhes: Gupta” February 8, Page 3). Why don’t he and other Madhes-based ministers make any attempt to implement the past agreements while they are in political helms? For whose cause do Madhes-based political leaders continue to threaten with a revolt? It is time for all the political parties including Madhes-based parties to leave aside their petty political interests. They have to cohesively work together to complete the people’s mandated twin tasks of peace process and constitution within the deadline.

Treaty issues
Joint Secretary Arjun Karki has raised a pertinent issue with his minister, ie, Energy Minister Bogati on Mahakali Treaty, which his party had vehemently opposed during their oppositional politics as well as during the armed insurgency period (“Maoist stance sought on Pancheshwar project,” February 9, Page 3). Karki deserves congratulation for raising a pertinent issue and requesting the departmental minister to find out his party’s view before going to India for a high level meeting. In addition to what has been suggested by Karki, it would be good for the Minister to take the concerned committee of the legislative-parliament into confidence on all the issues related to water resources relationship with India. I have failed to understand how Nepal has agreed to go for PDA, when the DPR and other matters on Pancheswhar multi-purpose project are yet to be finalised. When the treaty was negotiated and finalised with India, I do not think that the negotiators had thought of going for the formation of the PDA before all the details of the projects was agreed by the government on the basis of the Joint Group of experts.

It is time to see the true colour of the Maoist. Let us see how patriotic it is, since it often terms Nepali Congress and CPN-UML anti-patriotic and has been blaming others for surrendering Nepal’s rightful benefits to India in an unwholesome manner.

What authority does the Maoist party hold in inter-governmental affairs that its opinion is sought in national development projects? Is it because they can resort to vandalism? Projects of national importance should be carried out with national consensus, not at a single party’s whim.

Orwellian drama
There must be something inherently wrong with a Party where the commanders forcibly snatch pay cheques and identity cards of their own combatants in the name of ‘party policy’ (“Pocketing fighters’ cash ‘party policy’,” February 7, Page1”). We then have the Chairman of the same party living in a lavish mansion and paying a tremendous sum for monthly rent. I see shades of Orwell here.
