Research to develop ethnographic profile
With the support of the Social Inclusion Research Fund (SIRF), Central Department of Sociology/Anthropology (CDSA) of the Tribhuvan University (TU) is conducting research for the development of a social inclusion atlas and ethnographic profile.
The study will promote informed understanding of Nepal’s social, cultural and linguistic diversities.
Research director Mukta S Lama Tamang said the study would develop a profile of 42 highly marginalised groups. “Inclusive society is both moral obligation and practical need where this kind of research will help develop criteria to understand the social structure of the country. The project aims to produce information useful for inclusive policy formulation, social exclusion assessment and broader education regarding the country’s social diversity,” Tamang said.
Speaking at the research’s launching function, Education Minister Dina Nath Sharma underscored the need of such research for state reconstruction and policy formation. Emphasizing on the need of research dissemination and implementation, TU Vice-chancellor Hira Bahadur Maharjan said the research could be a milestone for the social scientists.
According to Tamang, the research will create three major outputs—multi-dimensional social inclusion index, social inclusion atlas and detailed ethnographic profile of highly excluded groups.
Dambar Chemjong, ethnographic profile team leader, said the study would recruit enumerators for data collection within 18 months. “We will merge the secondary data from the Central Bureau of Statistics and primary data by our researchers to finalise the project.”
Of the total Rs 60.5 million required for the project, the Norwegian Embassy in Kathmandu will provide Rs 60 million through SIRF and CDSA will contribute the remaining Rs 0.5 million.
The research team consists of over 40 academicians and social scientists.
