KATHMANDU, FEB 08 -
Photo.circle, which has been supporting emerging photographers since 2007, is currently in the middle of a workshop on working internationally as a photojournalist. The workshop is being facilitated by award winning photographer Philip Blenkinsop, winner of Amnesty International’sPhotojournalism prize for excellence in human rights journalism.
Philip Blenkinsop, who is currently residing in Thailand, is known as ‘a man of guerrillas and of resistances’. He has photographed the plight of the people in various
countries like Thailand, China, Laos, and Nepal. His collection of photos on Nepal titled Nepal State of Emergency, Nepal 2004-2005, and Nepal-During the reign of King Gyanendra, 2001-2006 have been exhibited at Lianzhou International Photo Festival, Stockholm National History Museum State of Emergency, Visa Pour l’Image, and Noorderlicht Photo Festival. Blenkinsop has been involved in environmental issues since the past few years.
The workshop has reached a point where photo.circle is able to showcase some works by the facilitators and students. This special screening will feature My Asian Heart,
a film about Philip Blenkinsop directed by David Bradbury.
My Asian Heart tells the story of how Blenkinsop quit his job at an Australian newspaper in order to capture the images of lesser known wars in Asia and the hardships he went through to do so. The screening will also showcase works by Philip Blenkinsop and the participants of the workshop.
The 14 participants: Arfun Ahmed Shawon, Benjamin Ward, Gyanendra Bhattarai, Ina Ingling-stad, Labib Mohammad Sharfuddin, Md. Samsul Alam, Prakash KC, Prasiit Sthapit, Rajan Shrestha, Rajneesh Bhandari, Salma Abedin Prithi, Sapana Shah, Sindre Thoresen Lønnes, and Tapash Paul are from Bangladesh, Norway, and Nepal.
The later phase of the workshop will include an extended exchange program in which the students will produce photo reportages.
