CIAA probes ministers’ property

BHADRA SHARMA
KATHMANDU, FEB 07 -
The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has started investigating property details of Minister for Health and Population Rajendra Mahato and Minister for Physical Planning and Works Hridayesh Tripathi.

On Tuesday, a corruption complaint was lodged at the anti-graft body against Mahato, while a case against Tripathi was filed some months ago. The complainants said the ministers owned property disproportionate to their source of income.

“We have asked the Special Investigation Taskforce to look into the matter and officers will be assigned for a detailed investigation once the taskforce comes up with a preliminary report,” said CIAA Spokesman Ishwori Paudyal.

The CIAA has assigned Joint Attorney General Badri Gautam to study the “illegal” property.

In Mahato’s case, the complainant said the minister amassed Rs 150 million illegally. The complainant in Tripathi’s case also said the minister has amassed property, including gold, worth millions of rupees.
