Over 500 chickens have died in the past two days in Satherjhora-8, around 15 km south-west of the two bird flu outbreak sites in Sunsari, according to a government official.
“Samples of the dead chickens have been sent to the Regional Laboratory, Biratnagar, for tests. We can ascertain the cause of deaths only after the lab sends its report,” Chuneshwor Meheta, the Animal Health Technician at the District Veterinary Office, said.
On Sunday, the government has confirmed outbreak of the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu at the Pathibhara Poultry Farm and the PK Poultry Farm and Suppliers in district. The rapid response team (RRT) deployed by the Eastern Regional Veterinary Health Directorate and the District Veterinary Office on Tuesday sprayed disinfectants and buried chicken faeces and fodder at the Pathibhara farm. “Work will be over by Wednesday and the farm will be sealed for three months,” Mahi Narayan Chaudhari, the chief of the District Veterinary Office, said. Disinfectants were also sprayed in one of the coops at the PK Poultry Suppliers at Itahari-6.
In Ghurbise Panchami, along the border of Panchthar and Ilam districts, 227 chickens, 463 eggs and seven pigeons were slaughtered on Monday and Tuesday. Police deployed along the Mechi-highway also slaughtered 1,200 chickens in Rakse in Ilam that were being taken to the district illegally. Police in Dhankuta also seized 11,500 eggs and 24 chickens that were being taken to the district.
