KATHMANDU, FEB 04 -
The five-month long feud between the party establishment and the Sher Bahadur Deuba faction in the Nepali Congress finally ended on Saturday.
The feud began with the dissolution of the NC sister wings dominated by the Deuba camp.
The truce came after party President Sushil Koirala offered provisional leadership of the Tarun Dal and the Mahila Sangh to the Deuba camp.
In a meeting at Koirala’s residence in Maharajgunj, it was decided that Dila Sangraula and Uday Shumsher Rana—both Deuba supporters—would be nominated as leaders of the new committees to be formed in the Mahila Sangh and the Tarun Dal respectively. The Koirala faction kept the leadership of Nepal Students Union (NSU). Ranjit Karna of the establishment camp will be the new NSU head.
NC’s Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting had on September 20 last year decided to dissolve four sister wings—Tarun Dal, Mahila Sangh, Adibasi Janajati Sangh and Prajatantrik Senani Sangh—a decision that had fuelled the NC’s factional dispute. Dismayed by the decision, Deuba had resigned from the party’s CWC on September 28.
Subsequently, NSU president Pradip Paudel, close to the establishment camp, resigned on April 2, reportedly under pressure from Koirala. Office bearers of all the sister organisations had already outlived their mandate.
“Saturday’s agreement is positive,” said Bimalendra Nidhi, a leader close to Deuba. “After over five months of continuous struggle, the establishment camp finally came up with a flexible deal. This will improve relations between the two factions.”
The meeting also agreed to retain current office bearers of the Adibasi Janajati Sangh and Magar Sangh. The presidents of these organisations are close to Deuba.
The leadership of committees in two other sister wings—Kisan Sangh and Prajatantrik Senani Sangh—will also remain as it is. Leaders close to Koirala are heading these institutions.
According to Nidhi, the new committees will be given six months to hold the general conventions of the sister wings.
