Remote girls to benefit as PU hostel soon

POST REPORT
KATHMANDU, FEB 03 -
Indian Ambassador to Nepal Jayant Prasad on Friday unveiled the plaque of a girls’ hostel being constructed at the Pokhara University with an Indian assistance of Rs 40.51 million.

The university does not have a girls’ hostel, making it difficult for girls coming from remote areas to manage their accommodation.

“The new hostel building will provide better facilities to girl students for their stay and study, which will help them secure improved results in their examination and upgrade their overall academic capacity,” the Indian Embassy stated.

The project is being implemented by the District Development Committee, Kaski.

An oversight committee of representatives of local development and administrative authorities as well as the university’s vice-chancellor has been constituted to ensure the participation of the local community in project implementation.

A memorandum of understanding was signed by the ambassador on behalf of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and Prof Khagendra Prasad Bhattarai, vice chancellor of Pokhara University, for the establishment of a long-term Chair of ICCR in the School of Business, Faculty of Management Studies at Pokhara University.

Under the terms of agreement, the ICCR, in consultation with the university, will appoint a suitable Indian academician to hold the Chair for a period of two years.

During the period, the visiting professor would contribute to the academic life of the University by engaging in teaching, research and mentoring. The Chair will commence from June 2012 and will continue till June 2014, the statement read.

The ICCR will meet the costs relating to the salary and furnished housing, medical insurance, international passages in respect of the Indian academician and his/her spouse.
