Ex-Army officer’s plea rejected

POST REPORT
KATHMANDU, FEB 03 -
The National Human Rights Commission has scrapped a case of human rights violation filed by a former senior Army official, Prajwal Basnet. NHRC rejected investigation as sought by the plea saying the case was out of its jurisdiction.

Basnet had filed a case against former army officials, including Pyar Jung Thapa and Prajjwal Shumsher Rana, claiming that he was unlawfully imprisoned and severely tortured six years ago.

A panel of NHRC officials that includes Chairman Kedar Nath Upadhyay, member Ramnagina Singh and Gauri Pradhan had decided to scrap the appeal.

Basnet found it funny that the NHRC took six long years to decide that the case was out of its jurisdiction.

“The NHRC act has not only limited its criteria but also supported quietly cases of human rights violation,” he said.
