BIRATNAGAR, FEB 03 -
UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Friday said that the Nepali Congress could now lead the government as both his party and the CPN-UML have led coalitions twice since the CA elections in 2008.
“We can either convert the incumbent government into one of national unity or look for an alternative,” said Dahal, adding that the party’s Central Committee had also discussed the possibility.
He argued that peace and constitution are impossible without an all-party government. “NC’s claim to the leadership of the government is natural as we (Maoists) and CPN-UML have already led two governments since the 2008 CA elections.” On Wednesday, he had asked NC President Sushil Koirala to join the current government saying that the peace process had reached an “irreversible point”. Dahal is of the view that a national consensus government is a must to push the peace and constitution writing forward.
Though the NC has staked its claim to the leadership of the next government, the party is divided over whom to make the prime ministerial candidate. Both Parliamentary Party leader Ram Chandra Poudel and senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba aspire to be the country’s next top executive.
Dahal was in Biratnagar along with Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai and Vice-chairman Mohan Baidya to orient party cadres on the current political situation and future prospects. Talking to reporters, Bhattarai said it would be better to give his government the shape of one of national consensus adding that it had made a substantial progress in the peace and constitution drafting process.
Bhattarai, saying that he had always been in favour of such a government, said he was ready to play any role in its formation.
Vice-chairman Mohan Baidya, who is demanding Bhattarai’s resignation, said party’s General Secretary Ram Bahadur Thapa was another eligible PM candidate.
