SHAKTIKHOR, FEB 02 -
The former Maoist combatants, who chose voluntary retirement during of the regrouping process, will leave their respective cantonments from Friday.
On the eve of their official departure, the former Maoist fighters from the third division camp of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in Shaktikhor, Chitwan, exchanged good-byes and good-lucks to one another.
“Friends who opted for voluntary retirement will start leaving the camp from tomorrow. We are bidding them farewell with a heavy heart,” said Janak Bista, spokesperson of the camp. He praised the retirees for casting aside their self-interest and choosing retirement to assist the peace process.
Out of 3,345 combatants in the PLA third division camp, 1,133 had chosen voluntary retirement option under which each of them will receive severance pay of Rs 500,000 to Rs 800,000 in two installments.
Many of the retiring combatants plan to start business and help the party organisation.
A team from the Special Committee for Supervision, Integration and Rehabilitation of Maoist Combatants led by Balananda Sharma reached Chitwan on Thursday evening to distribute cheques to the retiring combatants.
Sharma said it would take at least two weeks to complete the discharge process, which is said to take place in all seven PLA camps across the country simultaneously.
As part of the regrouping process, 7,365 combatants had chosen voluntary retirement.
