Martyrs’ Day was observed across the country organising various programmes on Monday.
Marking the day, Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) took out a rally from Shantibatika to the Martyrs’ Memorial Park in Lainchaur, where Nepal Army offered a guard of honour to the martyrs. Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai paid emotional tribute to the martyrs by garlanding their statues amid a function organised at the park. Chief justice, speaker of the Constituent Assembly, ministers, and others were also present in the function. Kedar Bahadur Adhikari, chief executive officer at the KMC, said the metropolis will provide Rs 10,000 a month to each of the four martyrs’ families and libraries will be named after them in the metropolis. The martyrs’ week is observed from Magh 10-16 as per the Nepali calendar.
During the week, Shukraraj Shastri is commemorated on January 24, Dharma Bhakta Mathema on January 27, Dasharath Chand and Gangalal Shrestha on January 29 and all other known and unknown martyrs on January 30.
