Cabinet nod to war-era land deals: Govt asked not to backtrack

POST REPORT
KATHMANDU, JAN 29 -
At a time when opposition parties are obstructing the parliament demanding that the government scrap its decision to legalise war-era land transactions, 16 sister organisations of the UCPN (Maoist) have decided to hit the streets to press the government to effectively implement the decision.

Organising a press conference in the Capital on Sunday, they urged the government led by their party Vice-chairman Baburam Bhattarai not to scarp the decision as sought mainly by the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML. The opposition parties have said they will not discuss any issue related to constitution drafting and peace process unless the government corrects its decision. According to their publicised programme, the Maoist wings will remind major party leaders on Monday of the government’s decision, submit a memorandum to Prime Minister Bhattarai on Tuesday and organise a mass rally on Wednesday to press the government to remain firm on its decision. “If the government scraps the decision, we will launch an agitation against it,” said Badri Bajgain, a trade union leader.

The Maoist-affiliated organisations also argued that the government’s decision was as per an understanding reached among the political parties in the past. The pressure not to scrap the decision is likely to put Bhattarai in a tight spot. The PM has asked the opposition parties to put their demand on hold for the time being, hinting at the possibility of scrapping the decision. Even coalition partners have demanded scrapping the decision saying it is against the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
