KATHMANDU, JAN 21 -
Senior journalist and former editor of The Himalayan Times daily, Ram Narayan Pradhan, passed away on Friday night. He was 73. Pradhan was undergoing treatment at the Chabahil-based Medicare Hospital for the last four months for kidney ailment.
According to Dr Rishi Kafle, senior nephrologist, Pradhan breathed his last owing to multiple organ failure. “He had developed permanent kidney failure and was on dialysis for the last few months,” Kafle said, adding that he was suffering from diabetes and had heart ailments.
Nepal Forum for Environmental Journalists (NEFEJ) in November had appealed for financial assistance for Pradhan’s treatment after his health condition deteriorated. According to the family, Pradhan was undergoing dialysis thrice a week and the family income was not sufficient for his regular treatment.
Pradhan started his journalism career in 1970 as associate editor of The Motherland, a private sector tabloid. He served for 20 years in the National News Agency (RSS) and contributed articles to international newspapers and news channels like The Nation (Bangkok), BBC London, The Times of India and South North News Service, among others. He was one of the founder members of NEFEJ.
Issuing a press statement on Saturday, NEFEJ President Laxman Upreti said with the demise of Pradhan, the Nepali journalism sector has lost a dedicated media personality. His last rite was performed at the Pasupati Aryaghat on Friday night.
He is survived by wife, a son and a daughter.
