TAPLEJUNG, JAN 17 -
Apa Sherpa, 51, along with his team on Tuesday embarked on the historic Great Himalayan Trail (GHT) from Ghunsa in Taplejung district.
Representatives of political parties, civil society, tourism entrepreneurs and local residents saw off the four-member team that also includes two time Everest climber Dawa Steven Sherpa, Kantipur Television journalist Saurav Dhakal and photographer Samir Jung Thapa.
They seek to cover a 1,700-km trail in the next 120 days. The team will travel along the Mechi-Mahakali stretch covering 20 districts. In the districts, they will talk about climate change and its impact.
The journey will end in Darchula district after the team traverses several routes including Helumbu, Trsihuli bazaar, Gorkha and Jumla.
The journey aims at sharing and documenting information on climate change and its impact, alternative energy sources and promotion of mountain areas and its resources, Apa said.
The GHT will also help draw the attention of the world to the impact of global climate change on the environment and the condition of people living on the Himalayan trail, Steven Sherpa said.
The main features of the trek are the Himalayan trekking routes along Taplejung and Darchula including popular routes of the country—Annapurna, Sagarmatha, Dolpa, Manaslu and Langtang.
The journey is likely to conclude on May 13.
