Timely statute: UML youth wing threatens stir

PARBAT PORTEL
DHULABARI (JHAPA), JAN 15 -
The CPN-UML affiliated Youth Association Nepal (YAN) has threatened to launch an agitation if political parties fail to conclude the peace process and write a new constitution within the stipulated timeframe.

Addressing the closing ceremony of the assembly of YAN cadres at Dhulabari in Jhapa on Sunday, YAN Chairman Mahesh Basnet said the association will begin an agitation if the new constitution is not drafted by the May 27 deadline. “We will bring the country to a standstill,” Basnet said.

The YAN chairman accused the ruling UCPN (Maoist) of delaying the constitution drafting process by bickering over petty issues. Issues pertaining to the forms of governance and state restructuring remain unresolved due to the Maoists, he said.

Basnet said that bestowing executive powers on the president as proposed by the Maoists will pave way for authoritarian regime in the country, while the form of government proposed by the Nepali Congress is “a ploy to continue the failed parliamentary system.”

The form of governance proposed by the UML with a directly-elected prime minister, a powerful parliament and a constitutional president is the most apt model for the country, he added.

The three-day YAN assembly, meanwhile, has decided to support the UML-proposed form of governance.

It has also decided to strengthen its relations with the mother party, work towards UML unity and press for building a youth-friendly ministry.

The national gathering of the UML youth organisation has also demanded greater participation of youths in the state bodies.

Around 500 YAN activists from all over the country attended the assembly.
