KATHMANDU, JAN 09 -
The 16 parties represented in the Constituent Assembly, including Nepali Congress and CPN-UML, on Monday concluded that the UCPN (Maoist) backtracked from its commitments and agreements made in the past.
The parties said that hopes for national consensus laid down by the seven-point pact have been dashed due to Maoists’ failure to live up to their commitment.
A meeting of the 16 parties held at Singha Durbar urged the Maoist party and the government to abide by the pact signed in the past, mainly the seven-point agreement singed on November 1.
“The Maoist party’s failure to implement the past deals has blocked the ongoing the peace process and statute drafting,” a joint press release issued by the parties said.
The alliance of the parties aims to press the Maoist leadership to “smoothen” the peace and constitution writing processes.
The fringe parties said there are serious doubts on whether a democratic constitution will be drafted as the Maoists are backtracking from a decision taken by the Dispute Resolution Subcommittee of the Constitutional Committee.
The peace process has been stalled after the Maoists said it cannot move ahead without first making progress on the constitution drafting process, mainly on the forms of governance.
They also accused the Maoists of altering the issues already resolved by Dispute Resolution Sub-Committee.
