Baidya seeks PM’s resignation for ‘compromise’ with Dahal
POST REPORT
KATHMANDU, JAN 07 -
UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has told his deputy Mohan Baidya that party cannot deviate from the line of peace and constitution but revolt, as advocated by the Baidya faction, is “inevitable” if national and international forces hatch conspiracies against the peace process.
In a meeting with Baidya, Dahal tried to cajole the hard-line leader by saying that the party had not surrendered with parliamentary forces in its core issues of combatant integration and constitution-writing.
“I have not compromised with other parties,” a leader quoted Dahal as telling Baidya. “Many core issues such as the system of governance, judiciary, election system, federalism and land reforms are yet to be settled.”
The Maoist chairman also told Baidya that more focus on ‘revolt’ at this point of time can raise serious questions about the party’s commitment to the peace and constitution-drafting process. Dahal has told NC leaders that the peace process cannot move ahead if their party disagrees on the presidential system. “If we budge an inch from the line of peace and constitution, we will have to take all the blame for the failure of the process. So we cannot compromise with the Baidya faction on this issue,” Maoist politburo member Haribol Gajurel said.
Baidya responded that immediate resignation of Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai could be a compromise with Dahal. “If the PM resigns, issues of the four point agreement with Madhesi parties and BIPPA will be automatically solved,” Baidya said. The hardliner said that his faction was not against peace and constitution-writing but the Maoist party should be sufficiently prepared for a revolt, given the failure to the process.
The Dahal and Baidya factions are working on a common position on the party’s immediate policy and programmes, keeping their ideological differences at bay. Meanwhile, a Central Committee meeting of the Maoist party scheduled for Sunday has been put off owing to a lack of homework about managing the intra-party rift. Dahal and Baidya will be talking once again on Sunday morning to seek a compromise.
Though Dahal commands a majority in the party’s Central Committee, he is not in favour of passing his political document through a vote. “Putting the document to a vote will pave the way for the party’s split,” said Bharat Bam, a leader close to Baidya.
Dahal, Bhattarai and Vice-chairman Narayan Kaji Shrestha are consulting with Baidya faction leaders to prepare a common view on the party’s immediate programme.
‘Dahal sold out to NC, UML’
NUWAKOT: UCPN (Maoist) Secretary CP Gajurel has lashed out at party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal saying that he had surrendered to the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML. Talking to media persons in Nuwakot on Saturday, Gajurel accused Dahal of supporting the policies of NC and UML in the name of peace and constitution. He flayed the party leadership for giving up its stance on revolutionary land reforms and land ceiling. Terming the present government, led by party’s Vice-chairman Baburam Bhattarai, a failure, he demanded that Maoist ministers be recalled from Cabinet.
