KATHMANDU, JAN 07 -
In one of the biggest seizure of illegal possession of a huge amount of money in US dollars, 10 Chinese nationals have been arrested by the metropolitan police early Saturday morning.
Acting on a tip-off based on intelligence inputs, a special squad deployed by the Metropolitan Police Crime Division apprehended the Chinese—eight women and two male—for the possession of US dollar 97,000 from Jagati, Bhaktapur, at 4 am. They were heading to Khasa on three vehicles (Ba 8 Cha 6426, Ba 7 Cha 5434 and Ba 7 Cha 9176) concealing the money in various parts of their bodies.
The team led by DSP Raj Kumar Lamsal of the division had been following the vehicles from Kathmandu and arrested when they reached Jagati. SSP Devendra Subedi, chief of the police division, said police frisked the Chinese after intercepting their vehicles and recovered the US dollars.
A preliminary police investigation reveals that the Chinese, who had come to Nepal on tourist visas, illegally earned the dollars seized from them. They were trying to return China exchanging their income in dollars, it says.
Subedi said the recent arrest has revealed that a huge amount of money supposed to be transferred through banking channels is being moved out of the country illegally. “As the money was earned illegally, they did not opt for banking
transaction,” said Subedi, adding that the arrestees might had a plan to invest the money in the black market back in China.
