Suicide cases on the rise

KAMAL PANTHI
BARDIYA, JAN 06 -
Kamar Jaha of Mahamadpur VDC-4 in Bardiya district committed suicide on Thursday. People said the 25-year-old hanged himself over a family dispute.

Indrakali Tharu, 85, of Motipur VDC-1 and Punsi Tharu, 83, of Baganaha VDC-8 also killed themselves recently. Police, however, have not established the motive behind the acts. Police say suicide cases in the district are on the rise. At least 61 cases have been reported in the last three months, a 20 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Most of the people who killed themselves are from the Tharu community, said Inspector Arun Singh. According to SP Ram Kripal Sah, lack of education and family disputes are the main causes of the deaths.
