KATHMANDU, JAN 06 -
A low-intensity explosion occurred near Peepal Bot in busy New Road on Friday afternoon.
However, no casualties and loss of property were reported in the pressure cooker bomb blast that occurred at around 3:20 pm, police said.
Nepal Defence Army (NDA), an extremist pro-Hindu underground outfit, owned up the explosion.
Police confiscated a lidless pressure cooker, some NDA pamphlets and books from the site.
The pamphlets issued in the name of NDA chief Ram Prasad Mainali and the organisation’s central committee member ‘Aditya’ advocated for Hinduism. Mainali, who was arrested in September 2009 for his involvement in similar bomb blasts, is serving a jail term.
DSP Dhiraj Pratap Singh, the spokesperson at the Metropolitan Police Range, said the explosion was just a publicity stunt. “It was simply an NDA stunt to steal the limelight,” he said.
The underground group, which has been launching attacks against other religions, gained notoriety in May 2009 when it detonated a pressure-cooker bomb inside the Assumption Catholic Church in Dhobighat, Lalitpur, killing three persons and injuring at least 14 others.
The group also claimed responsibility for the low-intensity bomb blast outside the office of the United Mission to Nepal at Maitighar on November 22 last year.
