7-pt agreement: Slow pact execution irks NC, UML

POST REPORT
KATHMANDU, JAN 06 -
Major opposition parties—the Nepali Congress (NC) and the CPN-UML—have slammed the government for slow implementation of the seven-point agreement signed on November 1 about pushing the peace and constitution-writing processes ahead.

Speaking in the Legislature-Parliament on Friday, opposition leaders urged the Maoist party not to put any conditions on the peace process. Maoist Politburo member Janardan Sharma on Thursday had said that the peace process could not move ahead even a single inch if the NC did not accept the presidential system in the government. NC Chief Whip Laxman Prasad Ghimire blamed that the Maoist-led government was moving ahead against the seven-point pact. He demanded that Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai inform the parliament about the causes behind the sluggish progress in the peace process.

UML leader Rabindra Adhikari said the prime minister would lose moral grounds as PM if he failed to advance the peace process. Also on Friday, the Business Advisory Committee of the parliament formed a taskforce to work on the amendment to the Constituent Assembly rules. The taskforce comprises Eakraj Bhandari from the Maoists, Ramesh Lekhak from the NC, Agni Kharel from the UML, Nilam Barma from the Forum Loktantrik and Kalpana Rana from fringe parties. The taskforce will suggest ways to the CA about incorporating the recommendations of the State Restructuring Commission.

Meanwhile, Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal on Friday boycotted the parliament in protest of the government decision to remove the statue of king Tribhuvan from Shahid Gate in the Capital. Demanding time at the start of the parliament today, RPP Parliamentary Party leader Chandra Bahadur Gurung warned of protests unless the decision was overturned. He said Tribhuvan had put on stake his own crown to bring democracy in the country and the decision to remove his statue from Shahid Gate is deplorable.
