KATHMANDU, JAN 02 -
Police on Monday detained more than 40 human rights activists who were staging a sit-in against the government’s intent to grant blanket amnesty to people convicted of crimes during the decade-long insurgency.
Forty-three rights activists including Kapil Shrestha, Kanak Mani Dixit, Govinda Bandi and Charan Prasai, who gathered in front of the southern gate of the Singha Durbar, were taken in custody for defying the prohibitory order. The rights activists united under the banner of “Civil Campaign against General Amnesty” are pressing the government not to implement the amnesty plan.
On Sunday, the campaigners submitted memoranda to Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai, Constituent Assembly Chairman Subas Nembang, Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala and CPN-UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal.
The detained protestors were kept at the Police Club, Bhrikuti Mandap, for three hours before being released at 4:30 pm, Deputy Superintendent of Police Dhiraj Pratap Singh said.
