KATHMANDU, JAN 01 -
Two child suicides in the Kathmandu Valley in the last 24 hours has reinforced the fact that there has been a steep rise in the suicide rate among children.
According to police, 11-year-old Om Bahadur Nagarkoti of Chunikhel hanged himself from a telephone wire last night. Similarly, Nirmala Tamang, an 15-year-old domestic worker took her own life using a shawl in Kumaripati, Lalitpur.
Police in Lalitpur and Budhanilkantha are yet to ascertain the exact motive behind both suicides. Based on the latest cases, police have reached a conclusion that the number of child suicide cases has been increasing significantly in all three districts of the Valley. The problem is so distressing that children as young as seven-year-olds have been committing suicide.
The causes of most of the suicide cases, however, remain hidden. Police investigation shows quarrels among parents, academic failure, harsh treatment, lack of care and love, unrequited romantic ideals, and other traumatic psychological conditions are to blame for this situation.
Sociologists attribute personal background of children to the causes of such crimes. According to them, increase in child suicide is the indication of ruthless change in the society. “Depression and frustration force children to commit suicide,” said Dr Dhurba Man Shrestha, a psychiatrist and professor at Nepal Medical College.
