BIRGUNJ, DEC 31 -
The Pawan faction of the Samyukta Janatantrik Tarai Mukti Morcha, an armed Tarai outfit, has announced to relinquish its armed activities.
After signing a four-point agreement with the government at Birgunj, Parsa, on Saturday, the armed group surrendered its weapons to the local administration. The peace deal was inked between the coordinator of the government talks team, Satya Pahadi, who is also the minister for Peace and Reconstruction, and the outfit’s chairman Pralhad Giri aka Pawan at Hotel Surej, Birgunj. The deal includes releasing all the activists of the group from various prisons and scrapping cases filed against its leaders.
The armed group, which was unleashing violent activities in the region for the past five years, submitted four 315 pistols and four 12 bore guns.
Speaking at a press meet after the agreement, Minister Pahadi said the government is positive about holding talks with the political groups in the country. “The government has shown maximum flexibility for the talks,” she said, urging the armed outfits to come to the negotiating table.
