Baidya threatens to overturn subcommittee’s decisions
POST REPORT
KATHMANDU, DEC 31 -
The hard-line faction of the UCPN (Maoist), led by Vice-chairman Mohan Baidya, has claimed to overturn all the decisions made by the dispute resolution subcommittee formed under the Constitutional Committee (CC) of the CA.
Speaking at the Reporters’ Club on Saturday, Baidya said the decisions made by the subcommittee headed by Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal would be reversed. Stating that Dahal has worked against the party’s ideology in the name of agreements, Baidya said all the decisions made by the subcommittee would be invalidated.
The Baidya faction has been raising serious issues over the subcommittee’s agreements to use the term ‘armed struggle’ instead of ‘people’s war’, determine the age for voting at 18 and put no limit for ownership of property, among other issues.
“Our chairman has worked against the party’s line; therefore, the agreements will be reversed. People’s revolution is the party’s basic ideology, so how can there be unlimited ownership of property?” Baidya questioned.
Claiming that the constitution would be promulgated by the Constituent Assembly (CA) rather than the subcommittee, Baidya claimed that the agreements would be scrapped in the CA anyway. The Maoist vice-chairman said the party leaders have not yet understood the significance of the CA. He warned that they would reject the term ‘people’s movement if the new constitution does not accept the term ‘people’s war’.
