DANG, DEC 12 -
It is a toilet complete with urinals for the boys. But the primary school in Dang district's Shantinagar VDC-5, for which the District Education Office (DEO) built the outhouse, has been using it to hold classes for the past two years.
Chairman of the school management committee Ratna Bahadur Pun said the school established in 1960 has so far not received any aid from the District Education Office to construct a school building.
According to him, they conducted classes on the school playground for some years after a building constructed with help from the local people was destroyed.
The school with 150 students has only a two-room building constructed with aid from an NGO and the local people. Principal of the school Min Bahadur KC said they shifted the classes to the toilet after the DEO built the three-compartment lavatory for the school. KC said they had actually asked for a school building, but got the toilet built for Rs 150,000 instead.
"We are left with no option but to conduct classes in the toilet," he said.
He said 18 students of grade two are presently using the toilet as their classroom. However, though the students got a classroom, others were forced to defecate outside as “everyone feels awkward to use the two toilets with classes going on in the other,” KC said. Students are, however, facing problems in the small room. A student Bhupa Bahadur BK said 18 students have to share two pairs of desks and benches in the room.
Acting District Education Officer Rishiram Rijal said his office was unaware of the school's plight. He said he will do the needful very soon.
