LALITPUR, DEC 11 -
The Patan Appellate Court on Sunday ordered the three District Administrative Offices of Kathmandu Valley, Nepal Police, High Powered Committee and High Powered Committee for Integrated Development of the Bagmati Civilisation (HPCIDBC) not to evict the squatters living alongside the river banks in Kathmandu for the next 35 days.
Responding to the writ filed by the alliance of various five squatters’ organisations, the court also directed the government to identify the genuine squatters before removing them from the settlements. The division bench of judges’ duo Ek Raj Acharya and Satya Raj Gurung also directed the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers to come with appropriate alternatives if the squatters are to be displaced from the river banks.
The squatters had moved the court after a taskforce formed under the leadership of HPCIDBC Chairperson Mahesh Basnet mulled their eviction. A meeting among the government bodies, including Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Physical Planning and Works and Ministry of Environment, had formed the 17-member taskforce on November 27.
A meet of the three major parties and Madhesi Morcha on December 5 agreed to rid the Capital city’s river banks of squatters’ settlements.
