World aids day: Country faring well, towards meeting MDG on HIV

POST REPORT
Aids
KATHMANDU, DEC 01 -

Various programmes were organised in the Capital to mark the 24th World AIDS Day on Thursday.

YUWA, an NGO promoting youth participation, in support of Global Youth Coalition on HIV and AIDS and Youth Activist Leadership Council, organised a ‘red ribbon caravan’ from Basantapur to mark the day.

The caravan visited Padmodaya School where various programmes were held to provide information to the students about HIV and AIDS before reaching Vishwo Niketan Higher Secondary School.

The theme of World AIDS Day this year is ‘Getting to Zero’, which was determined as per the five-year strategy to bring the HIV infection level to zero as announced by the United Nations recently.

National AIDS and Venereal Disease Control Centre also organised a rally which started from Ratnapark and ended at Nepal Academy.

According to National Centre for AIDS and STD Control, prevalence of HIV among adults (age group of 15 to 49) in Nepal has decreased from 0.39 percent (59,984) of the total population in 2009 to 0.33 percent (47,645) in 2010.

Nepal has to bring down the prevalence rate to 0.30 by 2015 to meet the Millennium Development Goals.

As of mid-July 2011, there were 18,396 reported HIV cases in the country. On an average, around six persons get HIV transmission in the country every day.

Globally, it has been found that more people than ever are living with HIV largely due to greater access to treatment.

According to UNAIDS, the number of people dying of AIDS-related causes in the world has decreased from 2.2 million in the mid 2000s to 1.8 million in 2010.

A total of 2.5 million deaths have been averted in low and middle-income countries since 1995 due to anti-retroviral therapy, according to new calculations by UNAIDS.
