KATHMANDU, NOV 29 -
Human rights defenders and civil society have appealed to the government to extend the term of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) by one year. In a letter addressed to the prime minister, the society said that the presence of an international agency like the OHCHR will be helpful in the promulgation and implementation of the new constitution.
The society has urged the government to be “loyal” to point No 9.1 of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed between the government and the then CPN (Maoist) on November 21, 2006.
According to the agreement, the two parties have agreed to give continuity to the task of monitoring human rights violations until the peace process sees a logical end. The civil society has lauded the role played by the OHCHR in monitoring and investigating human rights violations in Nepal and also in promoting and protecting human rights.
Stating that the transition is a critical phase, the society has requested the government to keep OHCHR until the peace process comes to a logical end.
It said the OHCHR has also not yet implemented an agreement with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to consolidate and collaborate with the later. OHCHR was established in Nepal following an agreement between the UN body and the government on April 10 2005. Its term will expire on December 8 this year.
