Govt to recognise Nepal Sambat calendar

POST REPORT
KATHMANDU, OCT 25 -
The government has decided to recognise Nepal Sambat as the national calendar and include it along with the existing Bikram Sambat calendar.

A Cabinet meeting on Tuesday formed a three-member committee headed by Padma Ratna Tuladhar to conduct a study on other native calendars of Nepal, according to government Spokesperson and Foreign Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha. Kumar Yonjan and Hari Narayan Malla are other members of the commission.

Nepal Sambat is one of the few native calendars, which was used throughout medieval and early modern Nepal until Chandra Sumsher removed it in 1960 BS. Meanwhile, those dealing with the Bikram Sambat calendar do not find the move much useful.

"At a time when the use of Bikram Sambat is fast declining due to the use of AD calendar, it doesn't seem much practical to opt for Nepal Sambat calendar that is used by a particular community," said Acharya Jayanta, associate professor of Sanskrit at Balmiki Campus.

Lok Raj Poudel of Astro Council Nepal said the government decision could spark controversy. "If the decision aims to replace the existing Bikram Sambat calendar, it would not be acceptable. We will stand against the decision," said Poudel.

The government has also decided to form Sankhadhar Sakhwa National Academy as well as a high-level Lumbini Development National Director Committee to prepare a master plan and develop international relations.

The government has appointed Punya Regmi as vice-chairman of Youth Self-employment Programme.
