KATHMANDU, SEP 12 -
The Pashupati Aryaghat that had been reeling under a shortage of wood to light funeral pyres for the past one week has heaved a sigh of relief after wood was brought in at the last minute.
Had the wood not reached the site on Monday, the Aryaghat would have been unable to carry out cremations from Tuesday. The Hindu shrine was in trouble with the wood shortage after the Forest Ministry delayed issuing orders to the District Forest Office (DFO) in Bara to ferry the wood. The wood for cremations used at the aryaghat is brought from the district.
“A serious situation was looming at the Pashupati Aryaghat after the ministry delayed the wood order to the Bara DFO,” said Harihar Dhakal, a senior assistant at the unit of Timber Corporation of Nepal (TCN) at the Aryaghat. “Now that the wood is here, all problems are over,” he added.
According to him, wood was unloaded from three trucks (each containing around 21,000 kg of wood) at the TCN unit on Monday.
“We were unable to order the Bara DFO for the wood due to some technical reasons this time around,” Dhakal said. “However, the orders have been released and the supply of the required wood has begun. The problem won’t arise again.”
Considered one of the holiest places for cremating the dead, the Pashupati Aryaghat, according to data at the Ghat Management and Service Committee under the Pashupati
Area Development Trust (PADT), requires around 6,000 to 7,000 kg of wood every day to cremate at least 25 to 30 corpses.
